Shipping and freight FAQ

Questions

How do fewer pallets change an LTL bill?

When the quote is per pallet, fewer pallets times the same rate is a lower linehaul. A fee charged once on both plans does not change.

How do I show savings from a tighter pallet?

Price the old pallet count and the new pallet count at the same rate and fuel. The difference is the planning savings.

Does pallet optimization change a per-hundredweight rate?

The weight may stay the same while the handling-unit count drops. Price the bill the way the carrier bills it.

When should LTL become a truckload?

When the pallet count times your LTL rate passes the truckload quote for that lane. Compare both with the rates you have.

How does overhang affect freight?

A pallet past the standard footprint can be billed as nonstandard. Keep cartons inside 48 by 40 when that is the booked size.

What should an operations director compare?

Handling units, product weight, and the quoted rate. The calculator supplies the units. The quote supplies the money.

How do I include detention or a liftgate?

Add them as accessorial rows. They sit on top of linehaul and fuel.

Why did savings show as zero?

The planned unit count was not lower than the baseline, or the baseline was left blank.

How do I explain a four-pallet reduction?

Show cartons per pallet before and after, the two pallet counts, and both totals at the same rate.

Does cube utilization change the carrier invoice by itself?

Only if the quote depends on space or on handling units. A flat truckload rate may not move when you remove one pallet.

How many inputs do I need for a planning total?

Units, rate, and fuel percent. Accessorials and a baseline count are optional.

What is a handling unit?

One pallet the carrier counts. A short last pallet is still a handling unit if it ships.
